Stashaholic's Scrapalicious Scarf Pattern
Phew - try saying that three times fast!
I get asked about this scarf more than any other piece I've ever designed.I swear, it was done out of desperation - my stash was overwhelming even me! So, I took some black, some different colours of Astra and went to town. Well, those that know me, know I have the attention span of a gnat, so what started out to be a poncho became a scarf. One that somehow has the power to make complete strangers stop be in the street to ask where I got it. The cool thing is that because every other row is done in black, one side looks dark and one side pops with colour - almost like shadow knitting. If you want tassells, just leave long edges of the yarn as you work. I had intended to weave them in, but then I decided I kinda liked them

So, here's the pattern (such as it is):
Stashaholic's Scrapalicious Scarf
A large amount of different colours (there's no real exact science here - it's whatever's on hand). If you want one colour contrast, knock yourself out. I'd suggest sport weight because otherwise it will weigh a ton.
Black sport weight - hard to judge amount because I used scraps, but I'd guestimate around 15 ozs
4.25 mm hook
- With black, chain a honking amount of stitches. I'd figure somewhere around 200, but really, it's however long you want to do it. (Mine starts at one knee, travels around the neck and meets at the other knee.) Fasten off.
- With contrast colour, join in first ch, ch 2. HDC in back loop of each sc across. Fasten off.
- Turn and with black, join in first sc, ch 2. HDC in back loop of each HDC across. Fasten off
- Turn and with contrast colour, join in first sc, ch 2. HDC in back loop of each HDC across. Fasten off
- Repeat until width required is reached.
It's not surprising you get a lot of comments, it's a beautiful scarf!

Okay, in the instructions for row 1 you say to chain a bunch, then in row 2 you say to join new colour in first *sc* - you have to sc in black as well, right? (Or am I just blind and missing that instruction in row 1? *g*) It looks great!

It really does turn out beautiful, but I have found that it does not loose its shape if you use both loops and not just the back loop. I use it all the time, and I have even done afghans this way.

Great idea! I have a zillion scraps that I've been sitting on for ages. Most are worsted and really short, so maybe I can do multicolored rows in sc.

A new way to use up scrap yarn. Will make a warm scarf as well as colorful.

For number 3 and 4 of the instructions, it should read "join in the first HDC" instead of sc. Gosh I feel like nitpicker (sp?) but I thought you'd like to know. Love you scarf. I WILL get around to making one.

Hi Sherrie - yes it is however long you want it to be - just leave a consistent tale at both ends. You can trip it up to make it even at the end. You can also add more ends to make it thicker if you want.
