Making Yarn – Sort of

I had my first wheel spinning class last night at Lettuce Knit. Laura from CosmicPluto was the teacher, and as always, was wonderfully patient with me as I fumbled my way through the evening.

I learned a few things.

  1. I am pretty much spastic for about an hour while learning new things. After that it gets a bit better
  2. All wheels are not equal. I started the class on an Ashford Kiwi and finished on a Louet S10. Like going from a Chevette to a Porsche. Next week I’ll try the Lendrum.
  3. I am in big trouble and wants me a wheel now!

Sadly the budget won’t stretch to one, so I’ll have to settle for spindling for now. I did break down and order a Bosworth midi, so I can’t complain too much.

  1. That yarn is fantastic! Congratulations.

I remember what a spaz I was when I learned to spin. Then I’d get the hang of it for a minute or two and it would be amazing. And then I’d “trip,” and a big fluff of wool would go into the orifice.

Your new yarn looks a lot better than mine. 🙂

  2. Thanks Jessie – you’re too kind…..

My favourite part is that the colour is actually called Froot Loops ROFL

  3. I was at Lettuce Knit today. I saw the Ashford Kiwi. I just started spinning with a drop spindle but I want a wheel. I probably can only afford the Kiwi. Now I’m not so sure. Any idea on customs for the Bosworth Spindle? I am gathering it is coming from the U.S.

  4. I’m sure that the Kiwi isn’t all that bad or they wouldn’t make it. Sadly it’s likely all I can afford too. The difficult part was the squeeking. It needed to be sprayed and lubricated. I’m hoping it’s all better next week so I can give it a better look.

I’m not sure if there will be customs on my spindle because I’m buying it from an ebay store, not from Bosworth directly. These people are distributors….so stay tuned and I’ll let you know. It should be here this week (yippee!)
