1054
1054 – that’s how many emails were waiting for me when I got home. That’s what you get for being on 32 Yahoo Groups.
I’m a little more rested that I was yesterday. We left Halifax at 10:30am on Thursday and rolled into Toronto at 5:45am on Friday. All in all, we made good time. And yes, before you ask, we did hit weather systems on this trip too. Fog going down, and rain coming back. It wouldn’t be a trip without it
Rather than bore you with a travelogue on this page, I’m just going to link to the pictures. I’ve put captions on each of them, and I’ve set it so you can view them as a slide show. If it doesn’t work, just click on the Slideshow button.
This trip became a history trip on a few levels. I spent a lot of time wandering around the Old Burying Ground (that’s what they call the cemetery – really!) and then we stayed in the historic Waverly Inn. It’s a lovely historic building, but be prepared to lug your suitcase up 3 flights of stairs! We also were looking to gather some of The Boy’s family history because his mom is getting older and her memory is fading. So we went to Spry Harbour and took pictures of all of the family gravestones so that he could try to piece it together. I didn’t bother to post those pictures because they weren’t all that interesting to anyone but him.
Most of the pictures in the travelogue are just random shots of Halifax that I snapped out of the car window. Thank goodness my new camera had an anti-shake mechanism I just adore the architecture and colours in Halifax. I think after watching the show you’ll understand why I want to move there. Once you’re out of the city, there are lakes everywhere. Each one more beautiful than the other.
I must admit that as much as I love Halifax, I would have trouble living there for one reason. Everything is fried. I swear if they could find a way to fry a salad they would!
Here is a list of the bad for me but oh so good foods I ate:
– deep fried pepperoni (not once but twice)
– clams and chips (not once but twice)
– deep fried potstickers
– fish cakes
– donair
– donair pizza
– steak
– countless pints of Keith’s (it’s not a premium there!)
Good thing I have a month to get ready for my physical – my cholesterol must be through the roof now. That being said, I did loose 3 lbs – must be the walking. You see, no matter where you start, everything is uphill in Halifax
I did spend time (and too much money) at The Loop. I fell madly in love with Lucy Neatby’s new yarn line and completely blew the budget on several colourways of Celestial Merino Dream.
Scarlett (I bought two but one is already cast on):
I also found two new patterns by one of my favourite Nova Scotia designers, Ilga Leja. I’ve cast on for Brickwork with the scarlet Celestial Merino.
I just liked the way this one looked. Goodness knows if I’ll ever do it.
One good thing about driving to Nova Scotia is that you’re guaranteed 18 hrs of uninterrupted knitting time. I managed to finish the front of my cotton top:
And one of my toe-up socks. I’m having real troubles with the second one. The Colinette Jitterbug that I’m using is pooling horribly. I’ve frogged it twice and even resorted to cutting the yarn to try to avoid it, but no luck. This one had a problem around the heel area, but the second one is smack on the toe. I’m not happy with this considering how much the yarn cost.
Today I’m catching up on email. Only 800 more to go through. Oh and tackling a mountain of laundry that threatens to topple over.
Clancy was very happy to see us come home. She hasn’t left my side since I walked in and is constantly telling stories. When I was unpacking she jumped in the suitcase as if to say “you are NOT going without me again!”
Don’t tell her but we may be going back in August

Welcome back!!! I am glad you had a good trip. The yarns are stunning! The Waverly Inn looks stunning…it’s pretty cool you got to stay and play in such interesting places! The pix are great!
Oh just wait until you get to see them in person….the pictures don’t do the subtle shadings justice. Ok so the Fiesta one isn’t so subtle, but the Scarlet goes from red to black and the Olive Green one is just beautiful!
The Waverly Inn is a very neat place – highly recommended.
I just love looking at pictures of Halifax, even though it makes me a little homesick. Although, for posterity’s sake, that’s actually not a chipmunk, it’s a squirrel. You can tell by the tail. They really are that small there (either that, or Toronto squirrels are just unaturally large!).
I love the Wikipedia link for donairs. Awesome! I’ve been in that 3:30am line-up once or twice. 🙂
Hi, I stumbled on your blog looking for Toronto knitters (I am relocating to TO in September)
Hilariously, I am in Halifax with family in Spry Harbour and the area. Kind of funny.
The Loop is a wonderful shop, I spend far too much money there. 🙂
Great to see you too Carlie – the Alpaca is working up beautifully. Lesson learned though – Yarn Overs and Merlot don’t mix!
Hope to see you at Toronto Hookups soon!
