6 of 1, 1/2 dozen of the other

It’s officially fall in Toronto…the leaves are turning, there’s a chill in the air, and the Halloween candy is in the stores! I’m happy because fall is actually my favourite season (despite the fact that I need to mainline Reactine).

To celebrate, I went coat shopping yesterday. I saw a lovely apricot coloured wool coat that despite what the saleswoman said, would not be warm enough for me. It was also almost $200. There’s no way I can pay that much for what at best would be a transitional coat that I could probably only wear until November at the latest…even if the material is made in Italy (and assembled in China of course). That’s a whole lot of yarn money spent on instant gratification!

No, I want the slow gratification that knitting gives me. The drug-like fix. The whole process from deciding on the pattern through to smelling, fondling and drooling over ordering the yarn. I decided that I was too lazy to go down to the yarn store, so instead I went to Knitpicks.com and ordered the Cranberry Sierra.

And while I was there, I decided to get the new circular needle set. I had been contemplating buying them individually, but decided it was less effort more cost efficient to do it all at once. They seem to have very pointy ends, which I’m finding critical to lace knitting.

Note to self: DO NOT sit on these like you did your bamboo dpn’s for they are pointy metal and will require a Tetanus shot!

And what am I going to knit with all this delicious bulky wool? I’m finally caving in and knitting the Einstein jacket from Sally Melville’s The Knit Stitch

From Random Shots

Now the moral of this story is that what I spent at KnitPicks is probably equivalent to what the coat would have cost. But think of the hours of enjoyment that I’ll get knitting it. That is if I can stay awake through the endless garter stitch!

  1. I knit this very coat about 3 years ago ( when the book first came out) I did it in handspun. On my new wheel. I made some changes in the pattern come in and talk to me at L.K.

  2. Oh Evil Temptress Denny – this is a ruse to get me back in the store, credit card in hand! A ruse I say! But you know I’ll be there 😉
