Well poor Cooper has been a sick kitty. Apparently he came home from the shelter with Coccidia. And a bad upper respiratory infection. He went from being an obnoxiously loving cat to a snot ball overnight. I took him to the vet and took a sample of his poop – something you should always do with a new shelter cat. Well voila, the parasite showed up – even though he wasn’t having any symptoms from that. He had to go on Lysene, Clavamox and a sulfa pill. I highly recommend McLean Animal Hospital. Dr. Chung was so caring and called me twice to check in on him! Unheard of 🙂
I learned the best way to get the Clavamox down him is with a syringe. He isn’t overly interested in wet food so I couldn’t hide it in there. I did hide the Lysene powder in the wet food and I think enough got down him to work. The sulfa pill has been a challenge. By challenge I mean that the damn cat is smarter than I am. He hid it in his cheek until I thought it was down and then spit it out where I wouldn’t see it until hours later. But as smart as he is, I’m equally as determined. So the element of surprise was suggested. Snuggle, hug, pet…relaxed kitty. Open kitty mouth and shove the pill down. Spit pill out.
Lather rinse repeat until success or exhaustion.
Pilling a cat who doesn’t want to be pilled is like trying to contain a slinky that has G force behind it.
But persistence paid off. He’s on the road to recovery – much less sneezy and snotty today. And back at the fishtank – a cat’s version of cable tv.
In other news, there has been knitting! Mother Nature won’t cooperate, so I took matters into my own hands (literally), starting a spring time colour of socks. Maybe it will nudge her along.
